The Great Wall of Madrid

The Great Wall of Madrid

If you love quoting Don Quijote but are confused by Confucius, then head to El Bario de las Letras where the legendary Chinese writer, philosopher, teacher and editor, teaches us one final lesson as chalk scribbled on a wall combines the legendary words of Chinese and Spanish scribes, Miguel de Cervantes and Confucius.

Chinese Confucius died in 479BC and Madrid´s Miguel de Cervantes died 400 years ago but their ancient advice lives on.

You must recognise good advice when you see it and despite Donald Trump´s interest in building walls with Spanish speaking countries, I am taking my advice from a building´s wall. Written in chalk against the building´s pink pigment are lines from the infamous Don Quijote. The wall is on the corner of Calle Santa Maria which runs parallel to Calle Huertas where their legendary neighbour Miguel de Cervantes lived and died.

Gone but not forgotten, the lines “Lucha contra 3 gigantes, El miedo, La injustice y la ignorancia” remind us to fight agains the three giants: Fear, Injustice and Ignorance.

Quoted alongside him, Confucius´consejo teaches us, “Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I will understand.”

Confucius said, “Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it.”

I understand that this wise wall quoting the quixotic Don Quijote has shown us something worth remembering so lets fight against the three giants, Fear, Injustice and Ignorance.

As Confucius taught us, “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”

The wall is on the corner of Calle Santa Maria and Calle Amor de Dios so for the love of god listen to our wonderful wonder wall as Donald Trump declares war on windmills near his golf courses.
